Dog Biscuit Recipes: Delicious Homemade Dog Treats | Happy Spaniels! (1)Tasty Dog Treats

He sits in front of the oven, peering through the glass door, and watches them bake, and he won't budge until they're ready to come out!

The recipes that follow are some of his very favourite treats, and we'd like to share them with you.

I'm sure your co*cker Spaniel will find them as yummy as Max does, and I hope you have fun trying them.Enjoy!

Beef and Carrot Home Made Dog Treats

You can make these yummy dog treats in any shape you like. If you don't have a dog biscuit cutter, you can roll them into balls or use the top of a small glass or jar to cut rounds.

If you don't have minced beef, you could crumble in an extra beef stock cube. If you decide to use an additional stock cube, don't add the salt because you won't need it.

Ingredients:

  • 300 gm sifted whole wheat flour
  • 65 gm powdered milk
  • 110 gm cooked minced beef
  • 1 beef stock cube
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 medium sized grated carrot
  • 75 gm lard or butter
  • 1 medium sized egg
  • 120 ml cold water

Instructions for beef and carrot homemade dog treats:

  • Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F/Gas Mark 4) and lightly grease two large baking trays.
  • Sift the flour into a large bowl, add the powdered milk and salt, and stir.
  • Crumble the beef stock cube into the bowl and stir again.
  • Add the minced beef, grated carrot, lard or butter, and the egg and mix thoroughly.
  • Continue mixing while slowly adding the water to form a stiff dough.
  • Roll the dough out onto a lightly floured pastry board until it's about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Using your favourite cookie cutter, cut out the shapes and place them onto the prepared baking trays and bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes.

This dog biscuit recipe makes around 60 treats using a 2 inch (5 cm) biscuit cutter.

If you want the cookies to harden, simply leave them in the oven until they cool.

I usually freeze most of the biscuits in a zip-lock plastic freezer bag and keep a week's worth of treats in another container in the refrigerator.

Peanut Butter and Bacon Crunchies

This is one of the tastiest dog biscuits we've ever made!

My co*cker simply loves them. He now recognizes the tempting aroma when they're baking in the oven and won't leave the kitchen until they're ready.

Ingredients:

  • 255 gm peanut butter (smooth with reduced sugar and salt if possible)
  • 244 gm whole wheat flour
  • 30g rolled oats
  • 180 ml non-fat or semi-skimmed milk
  • 1 large egg, lightly whisked
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • 3 medium strips of cooked, crisped bacon, chopped.

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 160 C (320 degrees F/Gas Mark 3).
  • Mix the peanut butter, egg and milk together in a large bowl. You might need to use a whisk to remove the lumps and help form a smooth paste.
  • Combine all the dry ingredients (oats, baking soda, and flour) and sift into the peanut butter mixture, then add the bacon bits and stir until it begins to stick together, forming a dough. It might be easier to use your hands at this stage to knead it into a firm dough.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to the depth of a coin (about 1/4") and cut into desired shapes. I have a cute bone shaped cutter that I use, but you could simply cut it into squares if you wish.
  • Arrange the shapes onto baking sheets lined with greaseproof paper and bake for 15-20 minutes. Remove them from the oven and check the undersides, they should be lightly browned.

Leave to cool in the oven or on a cooling rack, before storing them in the refrigerator for up to 6/7 days. They also freeze well for up to 3 months.

Salmon Crackers

These homemade dog biscuits are a particular favourite of Max's because he loves fish, and especially salmon!

As well as the obvious benefits of home made dog treats, the salmon in this recipe provide added nutritional benefits of omega 3 fatty acids.

You can easily adapt this recipe by adding or substituting other ingredients according to your dog's individual taste. If your dog loves cheese, why not grate some and add a small handful to the mix?

Ingredients:

  • 1 standard tin of salmon with bones, liquid and skin
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 125 gm whole wheat flour
  • 125 gm unbleached flour
  • 1 teaspoon of olive oil

Instructions:

  • Preheat your oven to 180 C (350 F/Gas Mark 4).
  • Mash the salmon to a pulp and add the oil and beaten egg.
  • Add the flour and combine into a workable dough, then roll it out onto a floured surface to the desired thickness and cut into bite-size pieces or use a cookie cutter.
  • Place cookies on non-stick or parchment covered baking tray and cook for 20 minutes, then cool completely.

These tasty dog treats should be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator or may be frozen.

Tip: You can substitute the salmon for mackerel or sardines or any other oily fish.

Savoury Peanut Butter Treats

Peanut butter is a high value reward for just about any dog and is ranked as one of the top ten best dog foods. The next two homemade dog biscuit recipes are incredibly easy to make.

Instructions:

  • Preheat the oven to 180 C (350 F/Gas Mark 4).
  • Cream the peanut butter and stock together, carefully.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour and baking powder, then gradually add the flour to peanut butter mixture until you have a stiff dough, add a little more flour if it's necessary.
  • Roll the dough out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch on a floured surface, then use cookie cutters or a knife to cut into desired shapes.
  • Bake for 20 minutes (longer for crunchier cookies) on an un-greased cookie sheet.

Yummy Beef and Carrot Dog Treats

Dog Biscuit Recipes: Delicious Homemade Dog Treats | Happy Spaniels! (6)Yummy Beef and Carrot Dog Biscuits

By Sharon
From: Bristol, UK

We tried making these beef and carrot biscuits for our co*cker Spaniel, Daisy. She loved them!

We tasted one when they were cooked. They weren't too bad; they were perfectly palatable to a human (still quite soft), but we'll keep these exclusively for Daisy.

We switched off the oven, put the dog biscuits back in to cool down, and left them overnight.

The following day they were suitably crisp and crunchy.

Can't wait to try some of the others!

Tasty Dog Treats!

I've used chopped chicken, leftover lamb, or whatever I've had to hand (almost) and every time, they've been perfect - or so my dog says! LOL!

This recipe can be easily changed and still gives excellent results each time.

I'm not much of a cook, nor do I really enjoy cooking (perhaps that's why!), but I so enjoyed making these dog biscuits for my co*cker spaniel - she was so appreciative and seemed to know I was making them just for her.

Ha! That's precisely what my co*cker does, too. When I'm peeling veg, I usually toss him a piece of carrot which he plays with for a while and then spits out. I'm forever picking up bits of carrots from the floor!

Great recipe, by the way!

Tasty Substitute!
By: Sandy

Hi, I tried making these dog treats for my co*cker Spaniel, Warrington, and he loved them. I've made them a few times and tweaked the recipe each time because I didn't have any ground beef.

I used the leftovers from a beef casserole. The gravy must have added extra flavour because Warrington wolfed them down.

I've also used a jar of baby food. I didn't use the powdered milk and cut back on the water until I got the mixture to a thick dough.

This is a versatile dog biscuit recipe, and, using your common sense, you can substitute pretty much anything you like.

Beefy Treats
By: Joaney

Not bad at all!

We tried these biscuits (both soft and hard), and our co*cker spaniel, Jack, absolutely loved them.

I think the beefy taste is what he likes because when we give him a raw carrot to eat, he plays with it for a while and then spits it out!
