Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton: Homers in second straight game

    2m ago

Stanton went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run Wednesday in an 11-5 win over the Royals.

Stanton flexed his power with a 449-foot two-run blast in the fifth inning. It was his second straight game with a home run after an ugly weekend set against the Dodgers during which he went 0-for-14 with seven punchouts. Stanton is up to 17 homers and 40 RBI on the campaign along with a .233/.288/.491 slash line.

Royals' Daniel Lynch: Surrenders six runs in bulk relief

    5m ago

Lynch did not factor in the decision against the Yankees on Wednesday, allowing six runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters over 6.2 innings.

Dan Altavilla was tabbed to serve as Kansas City's opener Wednesday, but he got only one out while allowing five batters to reach base. Lynch therefore entered in the first frame and immediately yielded a sacrifice fly before Jose Trevino slugged a three-run homer against him. The left-hander went on to allow two more long balls -- one each to Giancarlo Stanton and Gleyber Torres -- and six total runs were charged to his ledger. Lynch at least managed to eat up innings, as the 6.2 frames were his most so far this season, but he's now allowed 14 runs over his past 10.2 innings and has an ugly 6.35 ERA on the campaign. It's unclear if he'll go back to working as a traditional starter or continue to pitch behind an opener moving forward, but either way there's a good chance he'll fall out of the rotation when Michael Wacha (foot) is ready to return.

Yankees' Cody Poteet: Goes 5.1 frames in victory

    14m ago

Poteet (3-0) earned the win over Kansas City on Wednesday, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out two batters over 5.1 innings.

Poteet was staked to a 6-0 lead after one inning and cruised through five scoreless frames before the Royals scored their first two runs in the sixth. The right-hander had plenty of cushion at that point and ended up with his third victory across four starts. Poteet has completed six innings just once in those outings, but he's put up a great 2.14 ERA and 1.05 WHIP despite a not-so-great 13:7 K:BB over 21 innings.

  • Brendan Donovan STL LF

Cardinals' Brendan Donovan: Notches first steal of season

    21m ago

Donovan went 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, a stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Pirates.

Donovan extended his hitting streak to seven games. He's gone 9-for-27 (.333) in that span, but just one of those hits has gone for extra bases. The 27-year-old's steal Wednesday was his first of the season, though he's not much of a speed threat after logging just five thefts in 95 games a year ago. Donovan is up to a .247/.322/.368 slash line with four home runs, 28 RBI, 30 runs scored, 15 doubles and one triple over 270 plate appearances this season. He spent much of the first two months of the season batting leadoff versus right-handed pitchers, but Masyn Winn is now atop the order on a near-everyday basis, having hit there in all but two of 11 games in June. Donovan has hit no higher than sixth over the last week.

  • Jorge Soler SF DH

Giants' Jorge Soler: Gets on base four times

    27m ago

Soler went 2-for-2 with two walks and one run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Astros.

Soler has found some success at the plate in June, going 11-for-37 (.297) over 10 contests this month. He's also drawn four walks over his last three games, though his 9.6 percent walk rate is still his lowest since 2015. While it's good to see the designated hitter make more consistent contact, he's still struggling to hit for power. He's batting .217 with a .661 OPS, seven home runs, 18 RBI, 26 runs scored, nine doubles and no stolen bases over 56 games this season. Soler's lowest OPS in a season is .503 in 2017, but he played in just 35 games that year.

Giants' Austin Slater: Three hits, steal in win

    31m ago

Slater went 3-for-5 with two RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 5-3 win over the Astros.

Slater has gone 6-for-13 over four games since he returned from a concussion, though all of his hits in that span have been singles. The outfielder is up to a .212/.349/.212 slash line with four RBI, two steals and seven runs scored over 63 plate appearances this season. Slater is strictly a short-side platoon player, which currently has him functioning as a fourth outfielder for the Giants, offering coverage at all three outfield positions.
