    Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

On how he ended up signing Ademola Lookman in the summer of 2022, Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini said: "We had a senior manager at Atalanta (Lee Congerton) who had worked at Leicester, who saw the opportunity to bring him in and thought he was a possible useful player.

"Nobody could ever imagine he could make this much progress. He wasn't overly prolific in England. I changed his position to a more attacking role.

"Tonight he achieved something which will remain in the annals of football history - a stunning hat-trick."

    09:49 23 May

    Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Asked if he could have imagined last night's hat-trick growing up in Wandsworth, Ademola Lookman said: "Probably, yeah. I've always had the confidence in my ability.

"In the past two years I've been able to take my game to a new level and show it on a more consistent basis.

"Maybe it could have come earlier but it's come now. I'm pleased with the progress I've made but this is just the beginning. I hope for more nights like this."

This season and last are the first in his career that he's managed to hit double figures for goals scored.

Ademola Lookman's mentor and coach of former youth side Waterloo, Felix Emanus, also spoke to TNT Sports after the game.

"I really can't tell you my emotions - sky high," he said. "We've been dreaming about this for a long time, since Ade was a kid at Waterloo. Tonight was a dream come true.

"I cried when the third goal went in. I'm so happy for Ade. He works so hard, quiet lad. Sometimes misunderstood because of his quietness but he's a great kid. Wants to learn, wants to always get better and wants to reach the top."

Immediately after the final whistle Ademola Lookman told TNT Sports "it's one of the best nights of my life". Perhaps understated. A Dublin party was "100%" planned, he added. "We've got to celebrate, we made history tonight."

Lookman joined coach Gian Piero Gasperini's post-match news conference midway through and after the manager had left he spoke about the role he has had in his career.

"The past few years, the club and coach have supported me in terms of giving me minutes… it's helped me elevate my game to a new level," he added.

"The first few conversations we had, made me look at football a bit differently. It made it simpler in my mind in terms of what he expected from me.

"It made me look at, and play, my game in a different light. I'm very grateful to him."

Lookman laughed when an Italian journalist claimed a street may be named after him in Bergamo one day. The forward is one of about 120,000 people who live in the northern Italian city close to Milan.

"I feel the support from the fans from the first minute I was in Bergamo," he added. "The city of Bergamo gives me a sense of calmness. It's a very calm, relaxed city and that has helped me a lot with my living style. I'm focused on the important things."

  6. Lookman's journey to European glorypublished at 09:29 23 May

    09:29 23 May

    Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Born in Wandsworth to Nigerian parents, 26-year-old Ademola Lookman only joined a professional club in 2014 when he was picked up by local club Charlton Athletic.

He went on to make 45 league appearances for the Addicks in the Championship and League One, and did enough to convince Everton to pay £11m for him in January 2017.

Despite scoring 10 days later on his debut, to seal a 4-0 win over Manchester City, that proved to be his only league goal for Everton as he failed to establish himself at Goodison Park.

The former England Under-21 international went on loan to RB Leipzig, who then signed him permanently in 2019, although the German side also sent him out on loan - to Fulham and Leicester.

He switched his international allegiance to Nigeria, making his senior debut in March 2022, and then finally found a home in Italy with Atalanta after joining them that summer. Lookman scored 15 goals last season and his hat-trick in Dublin made it 15 goals for the current campaign. Here he is celebrating with his family at the Aviva Stadium last night.

  7. Lookman's magic momentspublished at 09:18 23 May

    09:18 23 May

    Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Ademola Lookman caught a Bayer Leverkusen napping to nip in front of him and convert Davide Zappacosta’s cutback for Atalanta's opening goal.

The Nigeria winger's second goal would have lit up any European final, as he latched into a wayward Leverkusen pass before nutmegging Granit Xhaka and bending a fantastic shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

That made it 2-0 after 26 minutes and he completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes left - and his third goal was equally as good as his third as he produced a step-over to beat Edmond Tapsoba before firing into the roof of the net.

    09:10 23 May

    Atalanta 3-0 Bayer Leverkusen

Now to another boy from London who has made his mark on the footballing world.

But while Raheem Sterling seemed destined for greatness from a young age, Ademola Lookman only joined Charlton Athletic's academy in 2014 - from a youth football club in Lambeth called Waterloo.

Now 26, Lookman became just the sixth player to score a hat-trick in a major European final last night as he claimed all three goals as Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen in Dublin to win the Europa League.

Itwas the first treble in a European final since Jupp Heynckes’ for Borussia Monchengladbach against FCTwente in the 1975 Uefa Cup (as the EuropaLeague was previously known).

Raheem Sterling missed out on selection for England's Euro 2024 squad on Tuesday but there is some positive news around his off-field work.

Last year, Sterling's foundation launched a scholarship programme, which provides financial support and mentorship for 14 students at King’s CollegeLondon and the University of Manchester overthe next three years.

Thescholarship is open to students from black, African and Caribbean heritage fromsocio-economically under-represented backgrounds in Greater London and Greater Manchester.

"Through education,we can drive real social mobility and create long lasting pillars that willlast throughout their studies, into future careers and beyond.

  10. Fair Game - Potential governance delay 'presents an opportunity'published at 08:57 23 May

    08:57 23 May

The group Fair Game, who represent a number of professional football clubs, say they are also hearing "from several sources" that the football governance bill will not be passed before parliament is dissolved on 30 May.

On X, they say:, external "Disappointing, but presents an opp[ortunity] to fill in gaps and produce a bill that truly delivers a fairer future", including "fair distribution, no vested interests, proper consultation" and "support for clubs".

  11. Doubts over football governance billpublished at 08:53 23 May

    08:53 23 May

    Dan Roan
    BBC sports editor

There is uncertainty this morning over whether legislation that would create an independent football regulator for the sport may not be passed before parliament is dissolved on 30 May after a surprise general election was called for 4 July.

The long-awaited football governance bill was published in March and has been passing through parliament. Last week it reached the select committee stage, but could now run out of time. Party whips will now hold talks to clarify what outstanding legislation can be passed in the so-called ‘wash-up’ period to get it into the statute book before the end of the current parliament. But that depends on co-operation between the parties to support bills.

One senior source told BBC Sport that the situation was “not clear yet, [it] should be clearer today. The question is whether the bill is passed in wash-up or not.”

  14. 'Concern at Bayern's manager search'published at 08:39 23 May

    08:39 23 May

    Andy Brassell
    European football expert

Now here's more from Andy Brassell on Bayern's shock move for Vincent Kompany: "The concern is the way the manager search has gone on at Bayern.

"They started trying to get Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen, moved to Ralf Rangnick, Oliver Glasner, plus various others, and they’ve just gone for so many different types of coach it seems like they don’t have a plan, don’t have an idea in mind.

"Kompany is still a relatively young coach (38). He might be the man required to bring the philosophy, which you don’t really expect with a club like Bayern.

"Upstairs they are normally tight and cohesive but they’re not that at boardroom level at the moment - and that’s a real concern for them going forward. Maybe that's the reason Alonso chose to stay at Leverkusen for another season.”

  15. Bellamy's future uncertainpublished at 08:32 23 May

    08:32 23 May

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Former Wales forward Craig Bellamy has been a key figure in Vincent Kompany's backroom team.

But it is not clear whether Bellamy will be heading to Munich with Kompany if, as expected, the former Manchester City man completes his shock switch to Bayern.

If Bellamy doesn't go to Germany, he would presumably be one of the candidates to replace Kompany at Turf Moor as Burnley plot an immediate return to the Premier League.

I can see why Bayern would want Kompany. Opportunity is too good to turn down. His ideology of how he wants to play football is very good, he just doesn't have good enough players to implement them how he wants. However, I think Burnley fans will have mixed emotions if he does leave. I know some will be happy but I feel some will feel like they've been kicked in the teeth because he could quite easily have been sacked numerous times over the course of the season but the club/most fans stood by him.

  17. 'Kompany's football philosophy is quite seductive'published at 08:19 23 May

    08:19 23 May

    Andy Brassell
    European football expert

European football writer Andy Brassell spoke to BBC Sport about Vincent Kompany's potential move to Bayern Munich from Burnley: “It’s a realleft-field shout.

"Kompany has been coveted for a while by various Europeanclubs. He did a decent job at Anderlecht, he did a really great job in hisfirst season at Burnley and I think the philosophy of football is really quiteseductive to clubs; clubs have been keeping an eye on him.

"Whether many ofthose elite clubs thought he was ready now I think is the question and reallythe big question as well is why has Bayern become such an unattractive job? He’s probably eighth, ninth choice for it."

  18. Bayern in advanced talks with Burnley over Kompanypublished at 08:14 23 May

Bayern Munich are in advanced talks with Burnley over the shock appointment of Vincent Kompany as their new coach.

The Bundesliga side believe Kompany wants to join them and the two clubs are aiming to agree on a compensation fee.

It is believed Kompany, 38, would take his Clarets backroom staff with him to Munich, including former Wales international Craig Bellamy.

Bayern have struggled to find a replacement for Thomas Tuchel, whose exit was confirmed last week after initially being announced in February.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, Germany chief Julian Nagelsmann and current Austria coach Ralf Rangnick have all turned down the job.

Talks about persuading Tuchel to stay on failed to reach a positive conclusion, leaving Bayern with a problem.

Kompany has built a decent reputation in his time at Anderlecht and Burnley, although the Clarets' relegation following lofty pre-season expectations has not reflected well on the Belgian.

Now then, before we look at last night's Europa League final in more detail, let's bring you the latest we have on Bayern Munich's interest in Burnley manager Vincent Kompany.

  20. Premier League managerial merry-go-round: Who moves next?published at 08:05 23 May

    08:05 23 May

Lots of potential moves there then as teams look to rebuild ahead of the new season - and that's why they call it the managerial merry-go-round!!

Since Sunday's final day of the campaign, four managers - Jurgen Klopp, Roberto de Zerbi, David Moyes and Mauricio Pochettino - have left their posts, which is more than the three managerial departures over the course of the whole campaign.

A host of big-name managers are now available, such as former Chelsea bosses Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, while there could be further exits. Here's all you need to know about those vacancies and what might happen.
