Renato even tries to protect her when she becomes vulnerable and lonely. It shows how a teenager learns the first lessons on falling in love and despite lusting after Malena initially like every male in the Italian town, she indirectly teaches him the value of love and humanity when times get bad during the latter days of WWII. Monica Bellucci had to learn Sicilian for the role, a dialect that is noticeably different from her native Italian. Originally highly censored in countries such as the USA and UK.
