Valentine Sugar Cookies: So Many Reasons WHY

In this recipe, you are going to find a batch of my signature recipe for cookies that are my version of Valentine’s sugar cookies coated with easy, no-fail icing.

The cookies are perfectly balanced with sugar and flavor.

You won’t max out on your sugar intake eating one of these Valentine sugar cookies but you will feel satisfied and stop that sugar cookie craving when you eat these!

I do not chill my dough, I have never had to, and if you follow the recipe, you will not have to either.

Some people do chill, but this recipe is perfect right away!

Chilling is what I prefer to do after the dishes are done and not in between making dough and waiting for the dough to set.

P. S. Just in case you want to know, I’ve used them on at least 50 dozen cookies in the last 2 years and many versions for my son’s travel ice hockey team to eat on the bus!

Kitchen Essentials To Make Super Easy Cut-Out No-Chill Valentine’s Day Cookies

  • a mixer (stand or hand whatever you have)
  • cookie trays
  • parchment paper to make clean up so much easier
  • spatula – for scraping down the bowls
  • oven to bake
  • a rolling pin to roll the dough evenly
  • a workspace
  • a Valentine’s Day cookie cutter of any kind (cupid, arrow, heart, etc.)

Ingredients For Your Valentine Sugar Cookies

  • Unsalted Butter
  • Light Brown Sugar PACKED
  • White Sugar
  • Egg
  • Almond Extract
  • Floursifted and set aside
  • Baking Powder
  • saltif you happen to use salted butter eliminate this
  • confectioner’s sugar
  • Karo Syrup
  • Water
  • Sprinkles – optional but awesome for color

How To Make Valentine Sugar Cookies You’ll Love

Step 1: Prep Your Oven And Your Pans

Preheat oven to 350°F and prep your baking pans with parchment paper to make cleanup easier!

Step 2: Super Easy Cut-Out Cookies Begin Here

In a mixing bowl, combine butter, egg, brown sugar, white sugar, and almond extract.

Using a separate bowl combine baking soda, salt, and sifted flour.

After mixing the wet ingredients, add the dry ingredients.

Mix well.

Valentine Sugar Cookies: Tips In This Step To Make Them The Best

  • The butter should be at room temperature
  • Your Egg should not be cold

Step 3: Rolling Out Your Sugar Cookies For Valentine’s Day

Once your cookie dough for the sugar cookies is combined, roll it into a ball in the bowl.

Prepare your counter with a few generous dashes of flour. Don’t overdo this or your cookies will be dry and crack.

Turn the dough out of the bowl and onto the counter.

Roll the dough, until it is not sticky, trying not to add too much flour.

However, work the dough until it is ‘shinier’ than floury.

Next, cut the dough in half.

Roll out 1/2 of the dough onto a lightly floured surface

Use a Valentine-themed cookie cutter, and cut your cookies out.

Bake the cookies in the oven according to the directed time.

Hot Tip In This Step For Cut-Out Cookies For Valentine’s Day

Again, do not add TOO Much flour to the countertop or you will have dry, cracking cookies. Less is better.

Step 4: Baking + Cooling Valentine’s Day Cut-Out Cookies,Matters

Once the cookies have been baked, remove them from the oven, allow the sugar cookie cut-outs to rest for five minutes then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool for about 1/2 hour more.

Failing to cool the cookies will result in icing issues that you just don’t need! Failing to cool the cookies could also result in cookies cracking when transferred from the baking pan to the cookie rack.

Step 4: Valentine Sugar Cookies, Once Cooled Can Be Iced

Mix your confectionary sugar with the Karo and the water to the proper consistency.

Ice your super easy cut-out no-chill cookies with love!

Allow the iced Valentine’s Day cut-out cookies to dry before packaging.

Flour can be the Debi Downer of any recipe.

Do you sift yours when you make sugar cookies? Yes, that is one trick I learned early on from Gramma Stella. Also, this can greatly affect the actual cups you think you measured.

Now call it ‘old school’ or call it efficiency, I promise you if you sift your flour, your cookies will turn out better than you can imagine.

It’s a simple process and I don’t care what brand of flour you use, (I’ve used most of them) it’s the game-changer in reference to baking! What you might discover is that 3 cups of scooped flour is actually four!

By and large, there is always a debate. Do you use white sugar or do you use brown?

Well, I’ll tell you my answer and then you choose your own path: I go 50/50. Why? Because I love a chewier sugar cut-out cookie, don’t you?

Dry and crisp is not what I expect when I dig my teeth into a sugar cookie.

Brown sugar lends to the moisture in a cookie and my cookies are a tad more airy/puff-up than the norm.

Yes, I love a puffed-up sugar cookie that is chewy and not dry! That said, I do a 50/50 split.

My recipe is going a bit of each.

A cut-out cookie is only as fun as the dough. If the dough is wrong, well, you won’t want to make them again.

Quite frankly, for years, I had struggled with sugar cookie dough and then I just did something better to make my life easier.

I TOOK MY TIME + I crafted successful Valentine’s Day cut-out cookies and if you have read many of my other posts, my Nonna and my Gramma were the patron saints of baking in my formative years of learning and I often brag that my Nonna Santa was an incredible cook, while my Gramma Stella is an incredible baker, even at the ripe age of 96.

They each taught me more in their kitchens than in any book. Baking is from the heart, not the book! You will get out of a recipe what you put into it, and I don’t mean the ingredients.

Make sure to set aside a few hours to make this recipe from mixing to cutting out to cooling and icing, but you can do things in between, from cleaning out drawers, to laundry to working on your laptop in between batches! I do.

It’s well worth it and everything turns out perfect every single time or you would not see it on my website.

Cookie Cutters Matter + Other Small Cut-Out Sugar Cookie Tips

I got great cookie cutters at Marshall’s so try there if you want a great deal on good cutters.

Also, make sure you have a pan that does not scorch at least buy one good cookie pan (invest is what I am saying.)

Parchment paper helps keep messes to a dull roar.

Make sure you have cooling racks too!

No Chill Valentine’s Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

  • A cup of Unsalted Butter
  • 1/2 C of Light Brown Sugar PACKED
  • 1/2 C of White Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 2 Teaspoons Almond Extract or 1 Tsp Almond Extract and 1 Tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 3 C Flour sifted and set aside + 1/2 C Additional set aside for counter and rolling out.
  • 2 Teaspoons of Baking Powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt if you happen to use salted butter eliminate this
  • Baking Tray
  • Silicone Mats
  • Cooling rack
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Mixer

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F

  • In a mixing bowl, combine butter, egg, brown sugar, white sugar, and almond extract.

  • Carefully remove each cookie onto a baking pan (silicone mat r parchment paper-lined tray)

  • Once your tray is filled, place it in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes (the cookies won’t look brown, but they will be cooked!)

  • Remove and allow the cookies to cool before icing them.
